war das die komplette Fehlermeldung? Oder stand da noch was drunter wie das in der art:
debian:~# /etc/init.d/mysql start

Please take a look at the syslog.
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists!
schau mal ob du hier /var/log/syslog drin etwas mit mysqld findest und was er dann ausgibt,
dann soll es anscheinend helfen in der /etc/mysql/my.cnf
diese Zeile auszukommentieren: expire_logs_days=10
aber schau mal was ind er syslog steht was mysqld angeht
